Book Drive in Full Swing

Want to do something amazing with that textbook you can no longer use and the bookstore can’t buy back? We have a solution that benefits our campus, the earth, and students around the world! Seriously!

Be Green! Be responsible! Help out your fellow man by improving literacy in Africa while at the same time diverting these books from landfills.

Donate your unwanted college-level books published within the past 10 years (highlighting/writing in books is fine), and any books used in a college class to our book drive. SHSU Golden Key has partnered with Better World Books (www.betterworldbooks.com) to run a book drive that will benefit Books for Africa (www.booksforafrica.org) and we would love to have your support!

We will have set up big green and orange collection boxes outside of the student center starting on December 7th, which will remain up until December 17th.

Books collected will be put up for sale online to raise a sustainable stream of funding for Books for Africa or sent directly to Africa. If the books cannot be donated or sold, they are at the very least recycled. Book drives like this one have earned over $1,700,000 for Books for Africa since 2003.

Thank you in advance for your help with our project – please spread the word to everyone you know!

New Member Recognition Tonight

Tonight is the New Member Recognition Event for all of you. You are not required to attend the event, but we encourage you to bring friends and family to this event. We've had a lot of questions about the event over the past week. We ask that you please wear business casual to the event. You can bring as many friends and family as you would like to celebrate this time. The event will start will a short program and history of Golden Key. We will then have a keynote speaker who will speak for about ten minutes. After the speeches, we'll present the certificates to all the new members present. Following the event, we will have a light reception with hors d'oeuvre's.

During this event, we will have two service projects going on as well. Every year, we ask that new members bring a new/lightly used toy or book to the ceremony. We will donate the toys and books to the SAAFE House of Walker County. Last year we donated over 50 toys and 75 children's books. We hope to do just as well this year. Please know that you are NOT required to bring any toys in order to be recognized. This is just one of the ways we help out our community.

Our second service event is called "Cards for Troops." We will have a table set up in the back where new members and their families can sign Christmas and Holiday cards to send to the troops overseas in Iraq and Afghanistan. We ask that you sign a couple of cards so that they all have a bunch of names on them. If you are interested in helping out with this event, you can bring a Christmas/Holiday card to the event, and we will lay them out to be signed. This is the first time we've EVER done this event, so we're hoping it's a success.

We'll also be selling Golden Key t-shirts and graduation honor cords at the event. The shirts are $12 each and the cords are $15 dollars each. We hope this answers a lot of your questions about what is going on tonight. If you have anymore please let us know. We encourage you to stay up to date with SHSU Golden Key through Facebook and our blog.

We look forward to seeing you tonight

Great Orange Paint Out

Golden Key International Honour Society is having a Painting Supply drive for the Kat Krazies (The Official Student Support Group for Bearkat Athletics). We need everyone you know to donate a bottle of paint or supplies so that we can have the larges painting event this school has ever seen.

On Oct 3 when the Bearkats play St. Joseph's University. We want them to run out of that stadium and see 100s of painted people. Thousands would be nice too. This is your chance to help make that happen. During tailgating, the Krazies will be able to help paint up faces, arms, bodies, etc up until game time.

So Come early, Paint up, Be Loud. Eat Em Up Kats.

International Conference

Sarah and I just returned from the International Conference held in Orlando, Florida for the last weekend in July. We learned a lot of good things to help take our chapter to the next level, and hopefully see some more chapter involvement.

Look forward to some exciting new events coming up for the next year. If you think you may be eligible for Golden Key, look out in late August and early September for our mail outs. Our New Member Recognition will be held on November 4th at 7:00 pm and we hope all new members will be able to attend.

If you are interested in playing an active role in the upcoming chapter, or have any suggestions please e-mail us and let us know. We'd love to hear from you. Be on the lookout for e-mails when school starts about member meetings, and ways to earn free stuff!

Congratulations to all those graduating in the summer session. If you still need to buy cords, you still have time. Stop by the Economics Office in the Smith Hutson Building, Room 232. They are $15. If you're interested in getting a Golden Key t-shirt before you know, please e-mail us and we'll make sure the office has some for you to buy (the shirts are only $12).

Thanks for everything, and we all look forward to a great Fall Semester,

Congratulations to Graduating Seniors

The SHSU Chapter has roughly 150 graduating seniors for the upcoming graduation ceremonies. All the officers and advisors want to take a moment to congratulate you on all your hard work!

For those of your graduating, you will be receiving a letter in the mail in the upcoming weeks with information for purchasing Honor Chords to wear at graduation. They are available in the Office of the Department of Economics & International Business in the Smith-Hutson Building Room 234. If you go in, ask for Sally, and she can sell you your chords. The cost is $15 (Checks made payable to SHSU Golden Key). Also in your letter, you will receive ribbons that you may chose to affix to your cap at graduation that distinguishes you as a GK Graduate.

Again, congratulations.
