Book Drive in Full Swing

Want to do something amazing with that textbook you can no longer use and the bookstore can’t buy back? We have a solution that benefits our campus, the earth, and students around the world! Seriously!

Be Green! Be responsible! Help out your fellow man by improving literacy in Africa while at the same time diverting these books from landfills.

Donate your unwanted college-level books published within the past 10 years (highlighting/writing in books is fine), and any books used in a college class to our book drive. SHSU Golden Key has partnered with Better World Books (www.betterworldbooks.com) to run a book drive that will benefit Books for Africa (www.booksforafrica.org) and we would love to have your support!

We will have set up big green and orange collection boxes outside of the student center starting on December 7th, which will remain up until December 17th.

Books collected will be put up for sale online to raise a sustainable stream of funding for Books for Africa or sent directly to Africa. If the books cannot be donated or sold, they are at the very least recycled. Book drives like this one have earned over $1,700,000 for Books for Africa since 2003.

Thank you in advance for your help with our project – please spread the word to everyone you know!

New Member Recognition Tonight

Tonight is the New Member Recognition Event for all of you. You are not required to attend the event, but we encourage you to bring friends and family to this event. We've had a lot of questions about the event over the past week. We ask that you please wear business casual to the event. You can bring as many friends and family as you would like to celebrate this time. The event will start will a short program and history of Golden Key. We will then have a keynote speaker who will speak for about ten minutes. After the speeches, we'll present the certificates to all the new members present. Following the event, we will have a light reception with hors d'oeuvre's.

During this event, we will have two service projects going on as well. Every year, we ask that new members bring a new/lightly used toy or book to the ceremony. We will donate the toys and books to the SAAFE House of Walker County. Last year we donated over 50 toys and 75 children's books. We hope to do just as well this year. Please know that you are NOT required to bring any toys in order to be recognized. This is just one of the ways we help out our community.

Our second service event is called "Cards for Troops." We will have a table set up in the back where new members and their families can sign Christmas and Holiday cards to send to the troops overseas in Iraq and Afghanistan. We ask that you sign a couple of cards so that they all have a bunch of names on them. If you are interested in helping out with this event, you can bring a Christmas/Holiday card to the event, and we will lay them out to be signed. This is the first time we've EVER done this event, so we're hoping it's a success.

We'll also be selling Golden Key t-shirts and graduation honor cords at the event. The shirts are $12 each and the cords are $15 dollars each. We hope this answers a lot of your questions about what is going on tonight. If you have anymore please let us know. We encourage you to stay up to date with SHSU Golden Key through Facebook and our blog.

We look forward to seeing you tonight

New Member Recognition

I just wanted to remind everyone about the New Member Recognition. This is when GK recognizes the new members and welcomes them in to the society. Please attend, especially if you are a new member. If you are an old member and would like to volunteer please contact a GK Officer. Hope to see everyone there!!

RECAP

Hey guys!

Tonight was the October General Members Meeting, and I just wanted to recap what was discussed. First we discussed past projects such as Great Orange Paint Out, Golden Key Q&A, and the School Supply Drive. Another topic, was reinforcement of the Golden Key Rewards Program (remember to keep attending to win prizes!!). New Member Recognition was discussed, and future projects, such as the Last Lecture Series, Book Drive for Better Lives, Christmas Card Drive and the Finals Relief Party were introduced. That was the meeting and I would like to remind everyone that the next General Meeting is November 11th, so please join us!!

If you have any questions please contact a GK Officer.

HISD School Supply Drive

We have boxes located in SHB 107 and the Student Activities Office in the Student Center. We'll be collecting supplies until October 19. If you drop them off, try to get your name on the package somehow so that we can credit your Golden Rewards Account.

If you click on the picture below, you can get an idea of some of the items HISD is looking for:

If you have any questions, please contact Sarah Martin (SEM007) or Jocelyn Rex (JRR007).
